Yahoo introduces Search Suggest in UK and closes Yahoo Photos

I got a mail (Via “About The Author” Contact Form) on August 29th from Gaylene Ravenscroft digital consultant at Hill & Knowlton, Yahoo!’s communication agency. The mail was to inform me about the launch of Yahoo! Search Suggest in UK.

I liked the part when they admitted that “Search Suggest is not a new feature for the industry, but it’s new for Yahoo! UK”, but I am not satisfied with their attempt.

Why?

We are accustomed with Search Suggest (SS), but what next? Where did they improve on it? When they were so late to incorporate SS, I thought they would add some value to it. There is nothing wrong in sharing some improvements for better user experience but it is an average move if you do not add anything to it.

If you do not add anything to an existing service, than there is hardly any need to highlight it. SS is almost a “taken for granted service” provided by a lot of search engines. This is a bad PR exercise.

And I got another mail in my Yahoo mail account stating that yahoo is closing “Yahoo! Photos” on October 18, 2007 and asking you to move all your photos (hosts more than 2 billion photos) from there to Flickr (hosts around 500 million photos) or any other place. Another poor move by Yahoo. As far as my prediction goes, they are going to loose some hard earned users in this process of migration.

Let’s see…

  1. I am not so sure about search suggest thing but I totallt agree with you on part of yahoo photos, when you have more than 2 billion photos at a place you certainly do not want to do something like that. They should have come up with some better idea.

  2. Here is something more about that feature.
